Ron's Rants ~ The way things should be...

TEA Party, anyone?

June 24th, 2009, 11:32 am · 15 Comments · posted by rlederman

So the Allen County commissioners have begun the process of raising the sales tax. Despite what Allen County Republican Chairman Keith Cheney says his party stands for, the two commissioners on the let’s-hold-public-hearings-to-raise-the-tax-because-we-can’t-cut-government-anymore side of the 2-1 vote were a Republican and … oh, yeah, another Republican.

This raises a couple questions:

1. Will all the local people (some of whom wrote letters about this blog and my take on their Tax Day rally in downtown Lima) hold another TEA Party? You know, they’re all so fed up with the amount government takes from people. Will any of those who showed for the April 15 Taxed Enough Already Party (which focused on state and federal spending) show up to oppose the county increasing taxes?

2. One of the speakers at that Tax Day rally was state Sen. Keith Faber, R-Celina. He’s presenting himself as quite the fiscal conservative on the state budget. So, Sen. Faber, now that some of your constituents face higher taxes again because of politicians, can we count on you to protest? Yeah, probably not. One of the commissioners who is going to raise the sales tax, Sam Bassitt, is Faber’s father-in-law, so I wouldn’t count on his voice being involved.

Hay, Ron, If someone would organize an Tea Party because of these new Taxes being raised here in the County. I would be right there. Matter of fact. I hope that they read this Blog. Because, neither Bassest or Rieff will get my vote anymore. I have left the Republican Party locally a few year ago. The State Republican Party whenever the last time we voted for a Governor. And I made a big mistake in voting for Strickland. The only one of two Democrats I ever voted for in my life. I guess I will not be voting for Commissioners anymore if it is just between a Republican and a Democrat. But, I will vote for a third party person or persons. When it comes to the county now. No matter what party they are. Was Sneary the one that voted against the tax increase. I will keep on voting for him. Even though it goes against my term limit believe.

  • Jim M. Hobbs says:

I see you have anwered your own question; and quite appropriately. Sneary’s stance however, is laughable. I won’t take the time to repeat all of the things that I have stated here before about his own incompetence.

But it’s rather interesting and very entertaining to see him learn more and more about playing the game of politics from his buddy Dan Beck. I will say though, that Sneary seems to be having more success at playing the “good guy” role lately than Beck has.

One only has to listen to Sneary speak, such as his recent appearance on the Talk with Ron Williams Show, to ascertain how completely lost he really is when dealing with the county’s budget and understanding the local economy. The questions poised by Williams brought forth juvenile responses at best from Sneary.

But that’s what Allen County elected!

  • DaveS says:

    Ron,

Were Bassitt and Reiff at the TEA party? I am guessing they were simply by part affiliation, but I can’t find any information to corroborate this.

    -Dave

  • rlederman says:

Dave, I do not believe they were.

Jim, I see you believe talk radio should be carried out in print, too. You don’t like Sneary, and I won’t get into all that here? Are you hoping to take Ron Williams’ spot by being more Dennis Shreefer-like? No details here, just some insults. That sort of thing?

  • Jim M. Hobbs says:

No Ron, I’ll never be a “radio” guy. If people want the “full” details they can listen to Ron’s show or visit his archives. It is, after all, the only local talk radio show we have and radio does seem to be the best format to get direct information; you’re getting it directly from the horses, rather, person’s mouth and not through a reporters.

Ron, it’s not that I don’t like Sneary or Bassett, or Reiff. At least two of them are very likable fellows in my opionion. I have had several conversations with Sneary (although he has no clue who I am) and he seems to be a very likable guy. Being likable however, does not excuse him from understanding the position that he ran for and was subsequently elected to uphold.

Now Ron, if you want me to start taking the time to detail absolutely everything for you; than give me a spot on your editorial page and I’ll gladly type away! That should sell some papers…and maybe bring some of your former customers back. (Now we both know that’s not going to happen!)

I didn’t listen to Shreefer much but I do know why he is not on the radio in Lima anymore. And if Ron Williams started broadcasting things about the local Republican Party like Shreefer did, he would be off of the radio as well. Don’t you think?

  • olderperson says:

I have no idea who Hobbs is either. And I have lived in Allen County all my life. Who is Hobbs? Even have own two businesses here. Still don’t know whom this Hobbs is? Anyhow, whoever he is. I don’t agree with him. So I guess it doesn’t make a differnce if I know who he is or not! One of the other posters bought up the Tea Party Protest right in front of DeHavens. As I told them.. They plan it. I will be one of the first one at the Tea Party. I was at the first Tea Party. and I did not see any local Government officals there. They were all as far as I know State and National. Except to Tom Ahl. A business man. I did listen to Shreefer and I use stand up for the local Republican Party at that time. But, if Shreefer was back. I would probley be on his side now. Except I think he turned into a Democrat. Which I would still disagree with him.

  • rlederman says:

Jim, I’m not sure Shreefer is off radio because he blasted Republicans. Probably had more to do with only blasting Republicans. He became a very one-trick pony. I also blast Republicans, but there’s some variety from me and from the editorial page. Droning on for hours five days a week about why Bush is an idiot tends to keep people from listening, which tends to keep advertisers from advertisers, which tends to keep talk show hosts from talk show hosting.

You’re as free as anyone to submit something, but a column outlining your grievances against any one politician is unlikely to see print. We generally don’t do guest columns that are solely to rip apart a politician. We have Lucente for that. (Just seeing if he’s reading.) You have 16 months before he faces re-election. If you did your reasons in letters, you could probably get them all in before November 2010.

You could outline your reasons here, Jim, since this is the second time you’ve said something that I’ve questioned and that you have refused to back up. Could your daddy also beat up my daddy, Jim? That’s what your claims have begun to sound like.

  • Jim M. Hobbs says:

Ron, if you’ll recall this is the second time that you have asked me to specifically lay my thoughts and facts out on the line. The first time came in the form of an email and pertained to the automotive industry. (I don’t count political cartoons but as I said, if you want to pay me and put me in print, I’ll be more than happy to point those out as well.)

So, I took the time to write an op-ed chock full of facts and not fiction. Of course it went unpublished, I’m assuming because it completely contradicted everything that had been so misstated by your Mr. Lucente.

That’s Ok; it’s your paper and ink and you publish who you want; people that fall in line with your papers beliefs. So, it’s not that I can’t recall facts or list them in excruciating detail; because I can. It’s just that you won’t print them so what’s the point? Why are you people so scared to print an opposing view? That of course is why your paper is hemorrhaging so badly. And why you should get out why you can.

Ron, I get the feeling that you are desperately trying to bait me into saying something negative about you. It’s not going to work. You’re not Lucente; you’re much smarter and don’t have to resort to pitching fiction as fact to make your point. You keep hanging on to Lucente though and he’ll take you right down the toilet with him. You deserve respect which is why I give it. The fact that you don’t want to take it well, that’s your issue to hash out not mine. Bash me all you want buddy just keep it factual.

If it’s one thing I have learned in 17-years of working in the prison system it’s that one cannot communicate with everyone using the same “language”. Yes, we all may speak English on here but different forms of it. This is why I speak to you in one fashion and Lucente and DrTorch in a completely different one. There are certain people that just don’t understand anything unless you address them in the manner that they are accustomed too.

And by the way, my “daddy” is dead. He passed away a year ago, God bless his soul. Does that make you feel better Ron, to take shots at me and my dead father for your Lucente’s benefit?

  • StillTheOne says:

I say tea party to the hilt on these guys. I mean all three of them. What you are seeing in the media by this group of comishes is on some fronts organzied. Anyone remember Sneary saying in the winter that nobody was talking about a tax increase, seriously or otherwise? Some of us then said it was the start of trial balloons and good cop/bad cop between the three. Anyone with a basic IQ should know it was “on the table” then. Either Sneary had his head in the sand, or he was not totally forthcoming. I say all three need to be shown the door on the next go around. They all will stutter and stammer when asked tough questions. It’s typical small town politics.

  • starrlady says:

I love tea parties. All the crazies in one spot so you know exactly who they are.

  • rlederman says:

Actually, Jim, I don’t recall our having that exchange about the auto industry. I do count the cartoons. I asked you for an example, and you didn’t deliver. Thus your daddy is also going to beat up mine.

I am asking you to back up your statements, You made them here, so I asked you to back them up here. You work for the prison system, so you don’t come with the credentials to impress me into guaranteeing you column space based on your assurance that you have some deep theory. Start here, Jim, and we’ll see.

But, thing is, Jim, when someone says something like “in my experience” and then won’t back up that experience, it isn’t much.

  • tkeiffer says:

Shreefer was fired from WIMA the second time because of his comments about the pope. His ratings were in the toilet toward the end and it was only a matter of time before he found the can.

  • rlederman says:

tkeiffer, what did he say about the pope?

  • limaradio says:

Believe me, I was there. Shreefer WAS NOT fired because of comments about the pope. In an earlier post ron said it best: “Droning on for hours five days a week about why Bush is an idiot tends to keep people from listening, which tends to keep advertisers from advertisers, which tends to keep talk show hosts from talk show hosting.”

  • olderperson says:

Hopefully, The Commissioners got the message today, too. With that Protest in front of the Court House. No more Taxes, not only Nationally, but Locally, too. I wish I knew about that protest. I would have loved to have been there.
