Congress play a role in war? Unheard of!

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008 by rlederman

This is actually the first paragraph from an Associated Press story about war powers:

“WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress should pass legislation to require the president to consult lawmakers before going to war, according to a bipartisan study group chaired by former secretaries of state James Baker III and Warren Christopher. “

What an idea. Some radicals once shared such a silly idea, but the U.S. Constitution has meant little to recent presidents or their lappies in Congress. For everyone else’s sake, the U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 8:“The Congress shall have power to …

“To declare war, grant letters of marque and reprisal, and make rules concerning captures on land and water;”

The rest of the AP story follows. (more…)

[Column] Remembering who we are

Sunday, July 8th, 2007 by rlederman

Is there any irony in a newspaper whose editorial page favors the legalization of drugs also having a drug policy? How about if that editorial position grows out of the belief that human adults should be free to do what they please so long as they harm no one else?

Is there irony in The Lima News prohibiting its employees from using certain drugs while this editorial page is often saying the government should not lock up adults simply for drug use or drug possession? Or isn’t there irony in The Lima News banning weapons from its property and at the same time arguing Ohioans should have the right to concealed carry? (more…)

[Column] Fox, O.J. run into free market

Sunday, November 26th, 2006 by rlederman

At least we know the free market still works, where people let it. That’s what you might take from this incredible little episode involving O.J. Simpson and the Fox network.

To put into perspective what Fox planned: The network and its cable news channel trumpet the line about staying the course in Iraq — or we’ll all get beheaded — but Fox was ready to parody murders in which the victims died in a fashion that would make al-Qaida proud.

Rather than demanding that someone pass a law to stop Fox from displaying incredibly bad taste, people threatened with something more powerful than law: revenue. More precisely, people threatened Fox with the loss of revenue. (more…)

[Column] Job of Congress more than nonbinding resolutions

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006 by rlederman

Give our retiring U.S. representative this: He doesn’t miss a chance to confuse the facts.

I, of course, refer to Rep. Mike Oxley, R-Findlay, who will step down from Congress at the end of this year. Oxley took exception to an editorial that this newspaper ran almost three weeks ago that stated a nonbinding resolution requesting the nation’s media help in the war on terror was a waste of time.

Oxley introduced the nonbinding resolution calling on the media to help in the poorly defined war on terror. His nonbinding resolution was in response to The New York Times story about the U.S. government tracking the finances of suspected terrorists. Conservatives said The Times committed treason, and one house of Congress responded by passing a nonbinding resolution.

A cynic might point out that, had Congress attempted any oversight of the war on terror — you know, that checks-and-balances stuff the Framers of the Constitution built into our government — there’d be some reason to believe the Bush administration when another secretive program came to light. But, to show us all Congress is serious about the war on terror, the House passed a nonbinding resolution in an area the Constitution forbids Congress from going: media oversight. (more…)

[Column] Losing another holiday: The war against St. Valentine

Sunday, February 12th, 2006 by rlederman

We are a little more tired and depressed than usual this post-Christmas season. As always, we’re figuring out how to pay off the credit cards we used remembering the true meaning of Christmas, but we also faced the most sinister challenge ever.

It’s frightening to think how narrowly we saved Christmas from the liberals. We overcame daunting odds, Christians in this country being outnumbered so badly. There are only three Christians in this county for every one person of another or no faith.

It’s exhausting, but having checked this year’s calendar, I see we’ve preserved Dec. 25 as Christmas. We’ve blocked the liberal subversion for now.

As tired as we believers are, we can’t rest.

Make no mistake, liberals long ago declared war on St. Valentine. Too bad Fox News Channel was so focused on the war on Christmas that it ignored the war on St. Valentine’s Day. Christians have been losing the war against St. Valentine since before he was a saint. (more…)
