Halloween will be when?

Friday, August 15th, 2008 by rlederman

I’m told Lima Mayor David Berger told a group Friday that the various political entities all had agreed on a date on which to hold Halloween this year. (Let’s put that another way: a date other than Halloween on which to hold Halloween.) I got this secondhand, so we’ll see what the various political busybodies announce in the coming weeks.

For the out-of-towners, the Lima area has this funny need to select the best date possible to send the kids out trick or treating. Oct. 31 is just too, well, commonsensical. Normally, it means there is a week of dates — which you need to check the paper to keep track of — on which Halloween is held.

But, in typical Berger fashion — and in the typical fashion or far too many area township trustees — they’ve all come up with a date on which to hold Halloween. Even the simple problems are no longer simple. Checking the calendar might be too easy, and God knows we’d all be lost without Mayor Dave thinking for us.

Noisy neighbors for a reason

Thursday, August 14th, 2008 by rlederman

What do the English know that Americans don’t? Apparently, they still have sex for fun on the other side of the pond.

The humor of this aside, it’s ironic that the neighbors complain about the noise but think nothing of forcing other people to pay for their housing, hence the term “publicly owned.”

From The Associated Press:

Man banned from girlfriend’s home after noisy sex

By RAPHAEL G. SATTER, Associated Press Writer

LONDON — A British man has been banned from visiting his girlfriend’s home after neighbors complained about noisy sex, a local official said Thursday.

A court barred Adam Hinton, 32, from being within 110 yards of his 29-year-old girlfriend Kerry Norris’ apartment, Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman Mike Taggart said.

Residents of Norris’s publicly owned home had been complaining since 2006 about thumping music, banging headboards and screamed obscenities, Taggart said.

Neighbors also complained about Norris sunbathing naked in her yard, and were upset that a 6-year-old child in the building had been “subjected to the sort of obscenities you wouldn’t want a 6-year-old to hear,” the spokesman said.

“She is a classic nightmare neighbor,” Taggart said, insisting the case was not about sex. “It’s about allowing your neighbors to have a normal decent life without being disturbed.”

The court granted the city council’s request for an injunction banning Hinton from the apartment because Norris had ignored a previous court order demanding that she be more quiet, Taggart said.

Norris last week was forced to pay $560 in fines and court costs for breaking the “noise abatement order,” Taggart said.

Neither Norris or Hinton could be immediately located for comment. Brighton and Hove is located in southern England.

Scoring at the Olympics

Who says we all can’t get along? The athletes of the Olympics apparently think we can:

Who cares about their health? Don’t hurt their feelings!

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 by rlederman

Apparently, the truth does hurt — feelings, according to one advocacy group.

Make the kids feel better about themselves. Don’t worry about the fact that they’re overweight.

Fat advocates say anti-obesity ads demean children

CINCINNATI (AP) — A national advocacy group says anti-obesity billboards in the Cincinnati area are demeaning to overweight children and should be taken down.

A new campaign from the local Center for Closing the Health Gap features outdoor ads that show heavy children pigging out on burgers and fried foods beneath the question, “Are we feeding our kids to death?”

The California-based National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance says the billboards must go because they unfairly subject fat children to ridicule from others, instead of inspiring them to eat healthier foods.

But the head of the anti-obesity group says the billboards are staying. He says they’re meant as a wake-up call for families with overweight children.

Losing ugly

Saturday, July 26th, 2008 by rlederman

Yours truly is no more a hockey goalie than he is a softball pitcher. WLIO’s Erik Tyger and I played on opposite ends of the rink Saturday with some of the adults who play in Lima Police Department/Lima Exchange Club roller hockey league. Fourteen goals later, I’ve lost another sport.

The red team (as in I’m a fan of the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings) lost 14-8 to the yellow team (as in Tyger is a Pittsburgh Penguins win, the team Detroit beat this year for the Cup). Kudos to LPD Maj. Tony Swygart for setting up the game. But, yeah, 14-8. Ouch.

Now, in my team’s defense, they played the game without a goalie, which is a sad statement for me to make — since I was the goalie. But, though the guys on my team jumped out to an early lead and led by a couple goals after the first period, the other team figured out the best way to play against me: Just shoot at the net and have about 100 percent go in.

Hats off to Erik. He wins the media game.

A Republi-weiler?

Friday, July 25th, 2008 by rlederman

The lawmaker is in good spirits and doing OK, according to The Associated Press, so save the indignation, but do you suppose the dog is a Republican?

Ohio state rep. bitten by dog while campaigning

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A state legislator from northeast Ohio was expected to remain in the hospital through the weekend after being bitten by a dog while campaigning.

A spokesman says state Rep. Stephen Dyer was being admitted to Akron General Medical Center on Friday for an infection that developed in puncture wounds.

Spokesman Phil Saken says in a statement that the Democrat from Green was attacked by a Rottweiler as he went door-to-door in Suffield on Monday. The wounds are on his right forearm near the elbow.

Saken says Dyer is in good spirits and doing OK.

The big game rescheduled

Thursday, July 24th, 2008 by rlederman

We tried this once before, but rain kept us from playing. This Saturday, we try again for the big rollerhockey game. Maybe the rain wil hold off.

It’s a 3 p.m. game at Jameson and Rice avenues, in Lima, should anyone want to see embarassment live and personal. The flier for the game is the blue link below:

Rough rail crossing

A reader sent this picture via e-mail to one of our reporters. It looks like the rail crossing on North Street/Reservoir Road is really getting rough, swallowing cars whole.

Bye, car

Game off — for now

Saturday, July 12th, 2008 by rlederman

The rain only put off the inevitable.

No makeup date has been given yet, but the happy looking TV guy and the angry looking newspaper guy eventually will face off.

The flier here comes from a rep with the LPD roller hockey. (Not sure if he wants credit, so we’ll keep him anonymous for now): Battle of the Media Juggernauts

Closer than the score would indicate

Friday, July 4th, 2008 by rlederman

Ron on his way to a 27 era27 ERA

The city of Lima — or at least those who were playing on the city’s behalf, not that many of them work for the city — once again defeated the combined team of The Lima News and WLIO in softball on Friday. Don’t be confused by the 20-7 final score. It was much closer than that. (No, really, I mean it, promise, it was!)

Now, only another year of listening to the trash talk from City Hall.

They look worried

At least Jordan had basketball
