What?!?! A politician lied? No!

Thursday, June 26th, 2008 by rlederman

Funny story from The Associated Press, if you still care to put faith in politicians:

Minister says Ohio governor betrayed church leaders

By JULIE CARR SMYTH

AP Statehouse Correspondent

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A church leader says Gov. Ted Strickland betrayed fellow Methodists and went back on a campaign promise not to expand gambling when he lent his support to a new lottery game.

The Reverend John Edgar, chairman of the United Methodist Anti-Gambling Task Force, said Thursday that Strickland promised to oppose more gambling in Ohio.

Edgar said the Keno game Strickland is backing as a way to raise state revenue and fill an expected budget hole is a betrayal of that promise.

Strickland, an ordained Methodist minister, said through his spokesman that he does not consider his support for Keno, a video game resembling bingo, as a violation of his pledge.

[Column] Keep on ignoring the obvious

Sunday, October 21st, 2007 by rlederman

How long are we going to keep our heads down here?

“Down here” meaning buried in the sand.

A couple of headlines on Associated Press stories from last week to demonstrate what I mean:

• “Senate speeds ahead with bill to quash gambling machines.”

• “Ohioans head to West Virginia as table games debut at tracks.” (more…)

[Column] Beck again able to divert attention

Sunday, October 14th, 2007 by rlederman

So Allen County Sheriff Dan Beck is back to illegal immigration.

Did something take the sheriff’s mind off the societal ills of gambling he was campaigning against not so long ago? Has the subject become a bit too uncomfortable now that we know Lima City Councilman Ray Magnus pulled in almost $1.5 million in gambling in just a year? Not so long ago, Beck was “protecting” the community by keeping out gambling. Turns out, there’s already a lot of it here. (more…)

[Column] 1.45 million reasons to have abstained on casino vote

Sunday, October 7th, 2007 by rlederman

Those who opposed a casino coming to Lima on religious grounds found the unlikeliest of allies in Lima City Councilman Ray Magnus.

It’s really no surprise that Magnus opposed a casino, at least now that someone has looked into the amount of gambling his bar does. What is surprising: The people who implied hell awaits those who gamble signed on with a man responsible for more than $1.45 million worth of gambling in only 12 months. (more…)

[Column] Numbers from Detroit illustrate mistake made in Lima

Sunday, September 16th, 2007 by rlederman

The impact casinos have had in Detroit, while welcome news there, will be more of the obvious to proponents of bringing a casino to Lima. The numbers should be educational for those who worked to stop the development — and frightening to those who opposed it from public office. (more…)

[Column] Why you don’t have casino vote outside Lima

Sunday, August 12th, 2007 by rlederman

So people outside Lima should get to vote on whether the city moves forward in trying to attract an Indian casino.

If you believe that, your beef is not with the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma nor is it with the city. The closest you’re going to come are the Allen County commissioners: Sam Bassitt, Dan Reiff and Greg Sneary. Their inaction is why county residents don’t have any say on casino-related issues. (more…)

[Column] Celebrating our freedoms by taking them from others

Sunday, July 1st, 2007 by rlederman

There’s more than a bit of irony in the casino fight starting up again so soon after Americans celebrate 231 years of independence from Great Britain. The irony is that, even as we shoot off our fireworks and talk about our freedoms, we go about trying to strip others of theirs. (more…)

[Column] Creating city’s urban legend

Sunday, June 18th, 2006 by rlederman

You have to wonder what will happen when urban legend turns into reality. It’s bound to happen, as we see real life borrowing from movies and television as often as those media borrow from real life.

A good story is the one about Lima town fathers long ago opting for a state prison over a state university. And now Lima’s current City Council has the opportunity to make a similar version of that story happen, sending a jobs and tax revenue factory just up or down the interstate. (more…)

[Column] In case you missed this, Lima still needs better jobs

Sunday, May 14th, 2006 by rlederman

Since the last census numbers came out well before Ray Magnus and Tommy Pitts joined Lima City Council, I’m going to share with them an obvious but perhaps overlooked fact: You both represent a lot of people who need jobs, or at least better jobs.

Every member of Lima City Council can apply that sentence about jobs to him- or herself.

Someone from outside our city might suggest that much is obvious. Perhaps we who live in Lima just need a reminder of how bad off some of our neighbors are. For such a reminder, I suggest the 2000 census. (more…)

[Column] Faith without action: Using government to save souls

Sunday, April 2nd, 2006 by rlederman

I realize this is going to cause some problems with the local religious community, certainly among the evangelical crowd and perhaps a couple others, but when did church leaders get so cozy with government?

I ask this question because of the opposition from some members of the local clergy to the possibility of a casino in Lima. If your particular brand of Christianity opposes gambling, it’s a no-brainer you’re going to preach to members the need to resist a casino. Anymore, though, opposition seems to mean some local religious leaders believe their message isn’t strong enough to persuade the faithful to stay away. (more…)
